On the occasion of International day for the elimination of violence against women, the Senate unanimously approved the establishment of a parliamentary commission of inquiry into feminicide, as well as all forms of gender-based violence. According to official data, one hundred and four women have been killed in Italy since the beginning of the year, until November 20, 2022: the phenomenon, therefore, continues to be an increasingly disturbing reality. For the important anniversary Palazzo Chigi, seat of the national government, was illuminated in red (see photo in evidence).

Femicide

“Violence against women is an open violation of human rights, unfortunately widespread without geographical, generational or social distinctions. Significant efforts have been made in recent decades to recognize, eliminate and prevent it in all its forms. However, for too many women, the right to a life free from violence is still not a reality. The daily reports bear sad witness to this and remind us that there are countries where even those who report are subject to serious and extensive forms of repression". “End violence against women, recognizing their capacity for self-determination are questions that challenge the freedom of all. Reporting is an act that requires courage. Effective action to eradicate violence against women must be based on the diffusion of prevention of the structural causes of the phenomenon and on a culture of respect that invests in the younger generations. This, through education in equality, mutual respect, the rejection of all forms of oppression”, affirms the President of the Republic.

Government at the forefront of violence against women

“This government is at the forefront of combating violence against women and the terrible scourge of feminicide. We owe it to the many victims, often without justice, and to those who are still forced to suffer this barbarism today”. The Prime Minister writes it on Twitter Giorgia Meloni. "The data concerning violence against women continues to represent a national tragedy. As a Government - adds Meloni - we intend to focus our commitment on three pillars of action: prevention, protection and certainty of punishment".
