Vinitaly took a long time to wait, rather than later two years off due to Covid-19 returns in attendance for the 54th edition. From Sunday 10 to Wednesday 13 April at Veronafiere, an appointment with one of the most well-known and anticipated events of the year. The numbers of the exhibition speak for themselves, highlight a desire and need to restart. As many as 30 conferences planned, 17 pavilions in total and 76 tastings. Vinitaly confirms itself, even after the interruption of the pandemic, as a fundamental crossroads in the sector at an international level. 4400 companies involved, coming from 19 different countries, arrived to present a total of 17 thousand labels.
Italian production
Il Italian wine is the soul of this sector, it is undeniable. Last year the homegrown wineries have generated just over 18% of global production, with 50 million hectoliters. There has been a growth of 1.6% compared to 2020 and this year too we are no less.
We are still the leading global producer, followed by Spain (35 million hectoliters) and France (34.2 million hectoliters). Looking at this podium, the fact that the transalpine colleagues recorded a significant contraction compared to 2020, with a decrease of 27%, makes Italian producers half smile.
Vinitaly: buyers
For Vinitaly, 700 major buyers from 50 countries are on the way. The fair has decided to collaborate with 30 very relevant exhibiting companies, proposing a project of tailor-made invitations, so to speak. Never like this year, that of the restart and the blockade of the Russian tycoons, it was essential not to "waste invitations", focusing on very specific objectives. The largest delegation is that of the United States, with 130 operators. It is on the USA that Vinitaly focuses most, as does the whole sector, considering how sales abroad brought 7.1 billion in profits in 2021, or 12% of the total.
