How to save on a holiday to the Greek Islands
The Greek Islands are among the most popular holiday destinations of recent times. Fabulous sea, culinary tradition, history, art, fun… All this and much more is what we can expect from a holiday in the Hellenic Islands.
Some dismiss these destinations a priori as too expensive, out of their budget. In reality, with a few precautions and the right advice, one can be organised low cost holiday which will leave us fully satisfied.
Choice of the island
Let's start with the choice of the island. The factors that have the greatest impact on costs are: il ticket price to reach the destination, the accommodation and of travel costs. An island that can be reached by ferry it is certainly more affordable. We are therefore talking about destinations rather close to Italy, such as Corfu or Lefkada.
Cities with international airports they have their pros and cons. You can find offers for airfare. On the other hand, precisely because they are easier to reach, these islands are also the most touristy, the ones with the highest prices for accommodation and restaurants.
Choice of period
To save we should avoid high season periods, those where mass tourism takes place. In the months of July and August a flight to a Greek island can cost even double what it would cost in the months of June or September.
To go in Greece in September it is an excellent choice for those who want to avoid the excessive crowding that arises during the high season months. The temperature is usually still quite warm but not sweltering. The sea also tends to be cleaner and clearer in this part of the year.
When to book
To save on airfare, there are two possibilities: book well in advance or take advantage of a last minute.
Naturally our advice is to book several months in advance, within the month of March. The closer you get to the departure period, the more the flight costs tend to rise. Playing in advance is therefore an excellent solution.
How to get around
This largely depends on the island you choose. If it's a sizable island the cheapest way to do this is to exploit public transport. Alternatively we can decide to rent a car or a scooter. If our health conditions allow it, the bike will allow us to save even more.
Where to eat
The secret to saving on food is to avoid restaurants frequented exclusively by tourists. We ask the locals where we can find a good one restaurant frequented by residents. In these places we will be able to spend less and eat better.
All-inclusive packages
If we don't have the time or the desire to weigh all these factors, then we can always look for all-inclusive packages, where the sum includes all costs: airfare, food and accommodation.
We end by saying that the Greek Islands are still low-cost destinations compared to other destinations. By implementing the suggestions listed, we too will be able to enjoy the beauty and magic of these places without spending a fortune.
