Origin of the party
Valentine's Day is the holiday dedicated to lovers and is celebrated on 14 February. It takes its name from the Christian saint and martyr Valentino of Terni. Pope Gelasius I established it in 496 d. C. with the aim of Christianizing the previous pagan festival of the "Lupercalia". It was dedicated to the god of fertility Luperco and included a series of rituals in contrast with Catholic morality. At the time, Valentine was not the saint of love in the romantic sense attributed to him about a millennium later.
The legends related to the saint
Valentine's Day Terni, born in 176, Christian bishop and martyr - a legend says - would have helped a young woman, deprived of means, to get married, giving her a sum of money necessary for her dowry. From his noble gesture, aimed at love, the tradition of considering him the protector of lovers was born. According to another legend, the saint celebrated the marriage between a young Christian and a pagan centurion. It is also said that he, hearing two engaged couples arguing, gave them a rose. The two not only stopped fighting, but decided to get married. In the city of Terni, where St. Valentine is the patron saint, various celebrations take place in February. The best known is the feast of the promise, which takes place on the Sunday before February 14th. Hundreds of future spouses participate.
February 14, one more opportunity
Valentine's Day is the ideal day for lovers to exchange cuddles and get gifts. Despite the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, couples do not give up on exchanging sweet affusions and declaring eternal love. Inevitable on this occasion are the classic flowers and chocolates, accompanied by cards and romantic phrases. In short, Valentine's Day is an important day to celebrate one's love. One more occasion to remember this wonderful feeling. Certainly not the only one, because love, like a plant, needs constant attention.
Happy feast of love
And singles, what will they do? They too can celebrate. Not love as a couple, of course, but love in the universal sense. The one for family, friends, their pets. But, let's not forget, even that for themselves. Because nothing, like love, is capable of giving value and meaning to life. So, it is appropriate to say: happy feast of love to all!
