With the arrival of milder temperatures and the summer crowds thinning out, autumn becomes a prime season to visit several Italian destinations.
The days are still bright, the warm colors of nature frame the art cities and villages, and the wine, truffle, and festival seasons are opening: all of this renews the tourist experience.
According to some guides, at the beginning of the autumn season, many Italian cities offer a perfect mix of historical beauty, comfortable climate, and less crowding. Here are a few cities to consider.
1. Florence (Tuscany)
The Renaissance city takes on a special charm in autumn: the streets of the historic center are quiet, museums like the Uffizi Gallery are more accessible, and the surrounding Tuscan countryside is in full swing for the grape and olive harvest. Must-sees include climbing the Duomo or the bell tower for a view of the city in the warm hues of autumn, strolling through the less crowded Oltrarno area, and sampling typical seasonal dishes like ribollita.
2. Venice (Veneto)
Venice in autumn takes on an almost fairytale atmosphere, with canals often veiled in fog and gondolas gliding silently. The city is less crowded than in high season, making it perfect for discovering lesser-known corners. Be warned, however: the possibility of high water increases in autumn, so it's a good idea to check for updates before you set off.
3. Bologna (Emilia-Romagna)
Known as "the fat one" for its rich gastronomic tradition, Bologna in autumn becomes the ideal destination for foodies and those who enjoy the combination of the historic city and local flavors. During this time, you can participate in events dedicated to truffles and Emilian cuisine, and the presence of the university makes the city lively and dynamic even in the less touristy months. The cuisine is worth trying: a plate of tortellini in broth, but also a visit to the Asinelli Tower to enjoy the view of the city's red roof and a snack in one of the many historic taverns.
4. Perugia (Umbria)
Umbria's capital and university city, Perugia is a perfect place for a fall visit: the surrounding hills are bathed in warm colors, truffle and chocolate festivals attract visitors, and the atmosphere is more relaxed. It's also an excellent starting point for excursions to nearby Umbrian villages.
5. Matera (Basilicata)
Among the destinations gaining increasing attention, Matera offers a vibrant autumn experience: the historic landscape of the Sassi, the warm lights, and a still pleasant temperature. Perfect for those with time and wanting to explore beyond the classic destinations of northern or central Italy.
