Among the hidden wonders of Calabria, the small church of Piedigrotta, north of Calabrian lace (Vibo Valentia), in the “La Madonnella” area, is a place that enchants with its history, art and scenic beauty. History

According to legend, in fact, the church was built in the exact point where a painting of the Virgin, kept in the captain's cabin, was found intact on the beach. Inside it combines elements of sacred art with limestone sculptures and reliefs, many of which were made by local fishermen and sailors.

In the church there is also a statue of the Virgin. Here, every year, the festival in honor of the Madonna of Piedigrotta is celebrated, which attracts visitors and pilgrims from different locations. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Angelo and Alfonso Barone they decorated the cave with statues depicting scenes and characters from the sacred writings, carved from the same tuff rock. Tradition has it that fishermen offer their prayers to the Madonna for a good harvest at sea. The light that filters through the natural openings offers plays of shadows and colors that contribute to creating an unforgettable visual experience.
