The Salvator Mundi, the fascinating painting attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, will be transformed into an NFT (non-fungible token), thanks to a partnership between ElmonX e Bridgeman Images. The famous painting, which portrays Christ holding a crystal ball, sold in November 2017 by Christie's in New York for a whopping $450,3 million, it's the most expensive in the world. The digital transformation of the painting marks a new chapter in its history. A particularly long and troubled history.
The "Salvator Mundi" today is in an unknown place
The painting, which can be dated between about 1505 and 1515, was brought to the attention of the public only in 2011, when it was presented, after the restoration, in the exhibition dedicated to Leonardo which was held at the National Gallery of London. The attribution of him to the Renaissance painter has been confirmed by some international scholars and disputed by others. Purchased by a Saudi crown prince following a "bidding war", it is now in an unknown location.
The sale will launch on August 12, but terms remain confidential
The Salvator Mundi will be «minted» by ElmonX, a platform specialized in digital resources, in collaboration with Bridgeman Images, an international image licensing company. Its sale will be launched on August 12, but the terms of the same have not yet been announced. «As the world's leading licensing specialists for the reproduction of art, cultural and historical works Bridgeman Images said in a statement. We are delighted to partner with ElmonX, experts at the forefront of NFT artwork creation».
Previous NFTs produced under the partnership between ElmonX and Bridgeman Images include masterpieces such as Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" (1503), Van Gogh's "Starry Night" (1889), Auguste Rodin's "The Thinker" (1904) and "Nymphéas" by Claude Monet from 1907. However, it must be said that the NFT market remains difficult. The same, in fact, in 2022 suffered a substantial drop of 83% in global sales.
