The new rite of mass: from next Sunday, November 29, the new Missal will come into force in almost all Italian dioceses. All local Churches will have to adapt to the new formulas for the Eucharistic celebration by Easter 2021. The change specifically concerns the translation from the original text into ancient Greek. The new version of the Missal, strongly desired by Pope Francis, has already been adopted by other episcopal conferences in various foreign countries.

The new missal

In the new Missal, the changes drawn up by the CEI (Italian Bishops' Conference) concern various moments of the liturgy of the Word and of the Eucharistic liturgy. In fact, some formulas of the Our father and also of Gloria and Kyrie. Furthermore, during the celebration the priest will address the faithful saying "brothers and sisters" and not only with the expression "brothers". The new Missal will be in effect from November 29 for a trial period but, from Easter next year, it will be mandatory in all parishes.

The Kirye

In order to be faithful to the original Gospel text, Greek invocations will be privileged according to the new Missal Kýrie, eléison e Christe, eléison in place of the "Lord, have mercy" and "Christ, have mercy".

The Glory

The changes made to the rite of mass also include changes to the Gloria. The part that reads "peace on earth to men of good will" becomes "peace on earth to men, loved by the Lord". The goal is always to be as relevant as possible to the translation of the verb original greek, eudokeo.

The new missal and the changes to the Our Father

Prayer it changes in a particular passage and that is in that “lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” that it becomes "Do not abandon us to temptation, but deliver us from evil". Another passage modified by the bishops is that "forgive us our debts" which is followed by "as we also forgive our debtors". In the latter expression the word 'also' is added with respect to the previous version.

Brothers and sisters

Brothers and sisters. This particular modification does not aim at the literal translation from Greek but wants to introduce a more incisive, inclusive and in step with the times into the rite. No longer just 'brothers' but 'brothers and sisters'. At the end of the Eucharistic celebration, the new farewell formula will be "go and proclaim the Gospel of the Lord " and no longer simply "go in peace".
