The Earth Is Blue as an Orange
With this initiative, the participating cinemas intend to show full solidarity with the Ukrainians affected by the war, allocating the proceeds of the evenings to charity. And, moreover, by inviting the victims of the Russian offensive to help with a donation. The author of the documentary is Iryna Tsilyk, born in 1982 in Kiev, Ukrainian director and writer. His debut documentary The Earth Is Blue as an Orange observes a family living wartime locked in their home and immortalizing every moment with a camera.
The plot
Hanna is a single mother who lives with her four children in the war zone of donbass, between Ukraine and Russia. While outside the house the war makes its disturbing and powerful noises heard, amidst chaos and bombing, the family manages to keep their home as a safe haven. A small oasis full of life and light.
Every member of the family has a passion for movies and so everyone is compelled to make a film inspired by their own life in wartime. The creative process intrigues the imagination on what value and influence the phantasmagoric world of cinema could have in wartime, between ferocious clashes and unspeakable suffering. How to imagine war through fiction? For Hanna and her children, converting trauma, pain into a work of art, is the best way to preserve one's humanity.
