The heat of these last few days and the overheating of the water are killing the mussels of Taranto.

When they are still at sea waiting to be collected for sale, they "die" from asphyxiation, report Legacoop Agroalimentare Taranto Fishing Department, Agci Agrital Taranto, Confcooperative Taranto Federcoopesca, Unci Agroalimentare, Confcooperative Taranto Federcoopesca, Casaimpresa Confesercenti Taranto, Fai Cisl, Flai Cgil and Uila fish and destroy months' work and sacrifices.

What causes this death?

This death is caused by both high temperature that from excessive presence of product in the second breast of the Mar Piccolo, as imposed by the 2012 regional ordinance, but due to this phenomenon some cooperatives could lose 70-80% of their production.

Furthermore, as reported by trade organizations and associations, illegal mussel farmers have already sold the product grown illegally in the first part of the Mar Piccolo and selling it at a lower price.

What do the producers ask for?

For many years, mussel farmers have been strongly asking the relevant bodies to implement a storage area also in the Mar Grande, but nothing is moving in this direction yet.

There are several technical discussion tables requested from mayor Melucci, councilor Ciraci and regional councilor Pentassuglia, meanwhile, the next 30 July there will be one meeting of the mussel farming table, which, we hope, will lead to positive results for mussel farmers first and foremost.
