A truly supportive panettone in this particular Christmas that we are about to experience. And solidarity arises from the commitment of two Italian companies that have been working alongside people in difficulty for years. For this Christmas Aism, the Italian multiple sclerosis association and the community of Sant'Egidio have promoted the initiative "Panettone suspended". A bit like the "suspended coffee" which is a concrete and supportive gesture that has been practiced for some time in many Neapolitan bars and other Italian cities.

The suspended panettone, how to join the initiative

With a simple donation of 10 euros you can leave a "panettone suspended" for those who cannot buy it. To join the solidarity initiative is simple. Until 6 December just connect to the site www.aism.it/panettonesospeso. Donate 10 euros to support scientific research on multiple sclerosis and donate the panettone to Sant'Egidio. In fact, the community will prepare panettone for poor, elderly and homeless families for Christmas. "We have chosen to create this partnership with the Community of Sant'Egidio - said Francesco Vacca, national president of Aism - because it reflects our own values such as solidarity, human dignity and the affirmation of the rights of the most vulnerable.

Whatever the nature of this condition the Panettone suspended represents a bit of the symbol of all this. It wants to increase and share a value and wants to offer, just like coffee in Naples, a moment of celebration and a moment of joy, to those in need.". And for the spokesman of the Community of Sant'Egidio, Roberto Zuccolini "the crisis is overcome with solidarity and by forming an alliance with those who do not forget the poor, old and new, whom the pandemic has made even more fragile and needy ".

A panettone, a simple gesture of generosity

Suspended coffee has now become a symbol of generosity.  It is characterized by the gift of consuming a cup of espresso for the benefit of a stranger. A custom is told, born in the last century, during the Second World War. People used to pay for two cups of coffee when they went to the bar. Two because one consumed it for himself, the other was paid for those who could not afford it. A generous way to be close to those in need. And it soon became a habit that many have. Not only suspended coffee, but also other foodstuffs donated to those in difficulty. And now the suspended panettone, a move to keep the spirit of Christmas alive, despite the pandemic.

"This year will be a different Christmas - explains the association -, but the intent is to ensure that it is still a party. It will be a "suspended" Christmas. Perhaps a little less shouted or a little more essential for everyone, given that due to the pandemic, more and more people are asking for help and tens of thousands turn to canteens and centers of the Community of Sant'Egidio. It is for the other half of us, the most fragile, the loneliest and most in difficulty that AISM, the Italian Multiple Sclerosis Association and the Community of Sant'Egidio come together to offer the warmth and joy of a party, to be stronger. together against the coronavirus pandemic".
