A group of researchers has made an epochal discovery: the presence of three big ones underwater volcanoes in a Channel of Sicily. The wreck of one was also found nave. That's what it's about.
The three submerged volcanoes discovered
Between Mazara del Vallo e Sciacca, between Trapani and Agrigento, during a scientific expedition coordinated by theUniversity of Malta and by 'National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (Ogs) of Trieste three submerged volcanoes were discovered. An international collaboration that has led to extraordinary results in research.
The characteristics of submerged volcanoes
The volcanoes are so impressive for their size that they are nicknamed as "submarine giantsi”: measure at least six kilometers wide and rise more than 150 meters from the seabed. This discovery provides new insights into the geological dynamics of the site, but also opens up new horizons in the underwater scientific research.
The volcanic areas
These are volcanic areas where there are several more or less large and more or less evolved volcanic cones which, however, all present volcanic activity from the past. They are volcanoes that have ceased their eruptive activity or that have cooling magma that are still able to produce energy and heat water.
The area has always been subject to these phenomena: we recall the appearance and disappearance of the Ferdinandea island.
The search for volcanoes
The international scientific expedition took place on board the German ship Meteor. The depths of this area have been explored, the rocks have been examined. It took place between 16 July and 5 August.
In 2019, the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics had found other volcanoes in the same area.
An extraordinary discovery
In addition to the volcanoes, the wreck of a ship 100 meters long and 17 meters wide was found. This discovery, which occurred halfway between the volcanic island of Linosa and Sicily, could shed new light on the maritime history of the area and lead to further research and fascinating discoveries.
An extraordinary news that has captured the attention of the whole scientific world.
