The data is also reflected in the job market: women occupy 22% of technological positions in European companies

Italy is among the EU countries with the highest presence of women graduates in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields, together with Romania, Poland and Greece. In fact, in the peninsula, a significant increase in the number of STEM graduates was recorded, with a share of 39% compared to the total number of degrees.

As the investigation shows CVapp – platform for online CV templates and cover letters – the number of women graduates exceeds that of men in Europe, but only one in three graduates in STEM subjects is female, more precisely 38%.

And the situation, at a European level, is enriched by a further fact: in the last ten years the number of women enrolled in STEM degree courses has remained stable, under 40%. This is why the growing data regarding Italy is even more positive.

The trend is also reflected in the job market, where women occupy only 22% of all technology positions in European companies. However, there are more and more initiatives organized to reverse the trend.

Closing the gap is important, and that is the key goal. The market, in fact, requires 1,3 million graduates and graduates in these subjects by 2027, but is faced with a lack of as many as 8700 specialized profiles per year.

Considering only the STEM sector, the demand is large: in Italy more than four out of ten companies have confirmed that they are actively looking for profiles of this type, but that they have difficulty finding candidates with scientific training.

The situation is confirmed by shifting the focus to artificial intelligence, the sector that rhymes par excellence with investments, prospects and opportunities: globally, women are very few (22% compared to 78% of men).

Very few, but they are paving the way for future prominent figures. Mira Murati, for example, was CEO of OpenAI and ChatGPT, and current CTO of the giant giant. Defined “most influential woman of 2023” from the Financial Times, deals with identifying, evaluating, and proposing all the technologies necessary to improve the products and the team's work. In other words, it makes sure that the OpenAI forge works well and churns out the best products.

But in recent history it is certainly not the only example: Julie Sweet is the CEO of Accenture, considered among the most powerful women within the US corporate sector. You have also served on the boards of directors of the World Economic Forum, the Center for Strategic & International Studies but also of Catalyst and the Marriott Foundation.

A made in Italy example is Samantha Cristoforetti, the first Italian woman in the crews of the European Space Agency and the first female commander of the International Space Station, who previously also obtained a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.

STEM in Italy, the number of female graduates is close to 40%, but there is still too much of a "gender gap" in Europe last edit: 2024-07-25T14:57:57+02:00 da Staff
