Between December 25 and 26, 2025, the skies over Italy will offer a captivating astronomical spectacle, accessible even to non-experts: the Moon and the planet Saturn will appear so close that they almost seem to touch, forming a conjunction visible to the naked eye shortly after sunset.
The phenomenon, reported by amateur astronomers and astronomical observers, occurs when the crescent Moon and the “Lord of the Rings,” so called for its ring system, are on the same line of sight from Earth, giving the impression of an “embrace” in the evening sky.
When to observe the phenomenon
On December 25th, Christmas Day, as the Sun sets toward the south-southwest, it will be possible to spot the crescent Moon, followed by Saturn. The Italian Amateur Astronomers' Union reports that the conjunction will last several hours before the Moon sets beyond the western horizon, with peak visibility expected until around 22:00 PM Italian time. On December 26th, Boxing Day, the encounter between the two celestial bodies will be even closer and more prolonged, with Saturn and the Moon very close together under the constellation of Pisces. Again, the best observation period is immediately after sunset, until just before midnight.
Everyone will be able to observe
The phenomenon does not require sophisticated tools To appreciate it, naked eyes are sufficient, while simple binoculars or a telescope will allow you to better distinguish the lunar disk and, for those with good visibility, a hint of Saturn's rings. This conjunction is not a rare event in the astronomical sense, but it is always an opportunity to learn more about sky observation and understand the dynamics of the planets in our solar system. In December, Saturn is well-positioned for early evening observation, gradually descending toward the western horizon in the hours after sunset.
Weather permitting, Christmas and Boxing Day evenings can therefore be an opportunity to go outdoors and admire a celestial dance that unites our Moon and the ringed planet, visible from cities and the countryside.
