The climate crisis is gripping Italy and, in particular, Sardinia, where it hasn't rained for months. In this mild winter without rain, the entire Mediterranean area is in "critical drought conditions", with Sardinia included in the areas most affected by the water crisis.
The worrying situation is certified by the report "Drought in the Mediterranean - January 2024" published in recent hours by the Joint Research Center of the European Commission (JRC). Some basins have reached less than 50% of their capacity. In some areas, specifically along the Posada river basin, it has been in force since January irrigation ban. Truly worrying numbers.
Drought Sardinia, some areas on red alert
In the maps attached to the EU agency's report, in fact, Sardinia is entirely in orange, a color that identifies the areas in "warning”, i.e. controlled by experts and institutions due to the particular gravity of the situation. But in some areas, especially in the Cagliari area, there are several places where the level is that of "red alert". In difficulty, they are mainly farmers and breeders. The widespread hope is that the disturbance expected for this weekend and by the beginning of next week, can bring the necessary water.
