Benigni's show in San Pietro: a monologue of laughter and hope

Benigni won over the audience by alternating hilarious jokes with moments of deep reflection. With irony, he suggested that he could run in the next elections together with Pope Francis, imagining that, with the name of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, known as Francis, they would win immediately.

The climax of the comedy was reached when Benigni approached Pope Francesco with the intention of kissing him. She expressed a desire to hold him and kiss him, joking that she might even dance a tango in front of him.

He said that two swiss guards they had told him that the only thing he couldn't do was touch the Pope. In the end, smiling, he said that he could still give a kiss, because kisses only make sense if they are given and that kiss was worth a hundred thousand.

The discussion then became serious when Benigni relaunched the anti-war appeals.

A life lesson

Benigni mentioned John Paul II, urging the children present to take their lives and make a masterpiece out of it. Her performance concluded a two-day period that saw young people from all over the world in Rome to celebrate the first World Children's Day.

The next edition will be held in September 2026, but the children will return to Rome next year for their Jubilee, scheduled for 24 and 25 May.

Pope Francis involved the little ones with questions and explanations on the concept of the Trinity. He urged the children to pray for peace, for parents, for grandparents and for sick children. Finally, he asked them for a simple but significant gesture: greeting their grandparents.

Among those present there was also Lino Banfi, known as the "grandfather of Italy". Pope Francis warmly thanked the organizers of the event, including Father Enzo Fortunato and Aldo Cagnoli. A curiosity: a group of altar girls served at today's mass, an exception for a solemn celebration at St. Peter's.
