A new idea to save Serie C
The new idea is the introduction of a salary cap for footballers, known as a “salary cap”. After years of discussions and pressure from many presidents, the Lega Pro Assembly has a historic reform was officially approved, with the aim of making third-tier football more sustainable and less subject to financial crises. There will be an experimental phase before the official start. The new regulation will come into force on an experimental basis from the 2025-2026 season, while the actual definitive application is expected for the 2026-2027 championship.
This initial phase will serve to test the system and allow clubs to gradually adapt, without incurring immediate sanctions. However, those who exceed the salary cap will still have to pay heavy fines, demonstrating the seriousness with which the League intends to pursue this reform.
How does the salary cap work?
The principle is simple: each club will not be able to allocate more than 55% of its ratio between emoluments and production value to the payment of salaries. The count will be carried out considering only the contracts signed after 1 July 2025, thus excluding any previous multi-year agreements. In this first phase there are no penalties in the ranking, but those who "exceed" will have to face a financial penalty. Objective: economic balance and competitiveness
