In recent weeks, the announcement of the call for tenders for the construction of the largest center has been published in the Official Gazette Biotech of Europe. The center will rise in cute, in the province of Palermo, on behalf of Foundation ReMED. This represents a golden opportunity for Italy, but above all for Sicily, to enter and confirm itself in the world of research.
The largest European research center
2020: this is the fixed date for the completion of the works. Once the last brick has been laid, a structure of over 25 thousand square meters will be available. Inside, state-of-the-art laboratories, clinics, various offices, an auditorium and staff quarters. All with the most modern technologies to allow researchers to work as efficiently as possible. And it is precisely the job opportunities that have attracted the attention of the mass. In fact, to make the structure work at its best, a considerable workforce will be needed. Over 600 hires are expected, and more than half of the offers will be aimed at scholars and researchers. But there will also be a need for administrative staff, custodians and maintenance workers. A great opportunity therefore to stimulate the labor market which is experiencing a very difficult period, especially in the South.
What is RiMED?
The Carini Biotech Center will be part of the RiMED Foundation. Foundation born in 2005 thanks to the agreement between Italian Government andUniversity of Pittsburgh. The goal was, and is, to create a center of excellence for biomedical and biotechnological research in Sicily. All using the most modern technologies and the long experience of the American University in the scientific field.
But why Sicily? The University of Pittsburgh has identified the island as the ideal place for research thanks to several factors. First of all its position in the center of the Mediterranean which offers great opportunities in the field of marine biology. In the region there are also several structures and laboratories of the highest level. An example is that fromISMETT, the Mediterranean Institute for Transplantation and Highly Specialized Therapies, also created in collaboration with Pittsburgh. Since its creation (1997), ISMETT is considered one of the most advanced centers in the field of transplants. And from 2020 Sicily will be able to count on another excellence such as that of the Biotech center. With the hope of offering work and hope to the many young Italians, reversing that sad homegrown phenomenon known as brain drain.
