Closed to the public since last October, the Baptistery of Florence has recently been reopened. The closure was necessary to build the construction site structure that will allow the restoration of the approximately 1200 square meters of mosaics in the dome.
The Baptistery of San Giovanni
By 20 January 2023, as scheduled, explains theWork of Santa Maria del Fiore who oversees the Baptistery, the Cathedral and Giotto's Bell Tower, construction work on the site will be completed. "It is a construction site, the cost of which is entirely supported by the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, and will also allow visitors to see the mosaics up close". The Baptistery of San Giovanni is one of the oldest churches in Florence, located in front of the city's cathedral, the church of Santa Maria del Fiore.
It has an octagonal plan and is entirely covered with slabs of white and green Prato marble. The sacred building is covered by a dome with eight segments resting on the perimeter walls. The dome itself, is masked from the outside by the elevation of the walls above the second level arcade and a flattened pyramid roof. It is a very impressive structure in which blend history, art and faith and which every year attracts thousands and thousands of visitors from all over the world.
