Recycle and turn a wreck into art. It is not known who brought it there. Nor how long it has been there. An abandoned boat on the beach of Punta Bianca has become the basis for a real happening. To recycle to give new life. An intervention curated by the students ofMichelangelo Academy of Fine Arts in Agrigento.
The Academy of Fine Arts launches the idea
The Academy has been operating for over 40 years and is not new to actions of this type. A couple of years ago, with great success, he proposed the adoption of the vases from the avenue of victory in the city. Each citizen had the opportunity to place a decorated ceramic vase, to guard the sea and the environment. Everyone was able to sign their own vase and take care of it.
Saturday 15 May, it was the turn of the intervention in Punta Bianca. Armed with paints and brushes, ten boys and girls from the Academy left early on a minibus made available by the structure. In this windy May, on the seashore, they worked hard on the project. The goal is to recycle, to make art, to put the boat back into play. From a mere object abandoned as a warning.
How the art project for the abandoned boat was born
“We created sketches - explains the director of the Academy Alfredo Prado - and evaluated the type of intervention, it had to be fast and effective. We needed an idea to start from. With the students we decided to recycle the boat, to turn it into a planter. It is a gesture that clearly declares the transformative capacity of art".
Little is known about the boat, perhaps used for a voyage of hope. Maybe a simple wreck. Now it is a candidate to become a symbol of an art capable of recycling. Now a symbol of migration, of crossing in search of a better future. The blue boat of Punta Bianca was an opportunity for young artists to reaffirm a concept that is close to their hearts.
In fact, they used a sentence by the realist writer Giovanni Verga: "The sea has no country either, and it belongs to all those who listen to it". The quote is shown on one of the sides of the boat. Recycling as a creative act. To amend the state of neglect, to prove that there is always a second chance. Recycle tells this
Preserving the environment of Punta Bianca through art
Punta Bianca, characterized by the dazzling whiteness of the marl, typical of the Agrigento coast, is a nature reserve. The flower boat aims to make this place even more beautiful if possible. A tangible example of how, with the help of poetry, we can recycle and make art.
Poetic recycling of a boat: it will become a planter
Working on the boat, together, was an act of confrontation and aggregation. The students measured themselves with the real-life experimentation of the techniques learned, and in addition they cooperated and found, with their eyes, the power of this gesture. This kind of actions can raise awareness, preserve the environment around us. Recycle, give a new use, change the state of things. After carrying men, effort and hopes, therefore, the boat will now be filled with flowers.
