Prosecco beats champagne ranking first among sparkling wines exported from EU member states to non-European countries. With 205 million liters or 41%, the victory is very clear considering that Champagne, in second place, stops at 13%, 66 million liters.
Despite the pandemic and the closures, an all-tricolor record arrives, which makes us proud.
Prosecco beats Champagne
However, the victory is double and the satisfaction is double by producers since China has recently officially recognized our Prosecco. The Doc Consortium is therefore rejoicing, with another important international recognition. The match had started in 2014 when the Consortium has deposited in China the Prosecco collective brand. Now, the recognition has also come from the Ambassador of Italy to China, Luca Ferrari. He in a letter to the president of the consortium, expresses his "Personal congratulations" for the record. At the same time, according to the latest estimates, Prosecco outpaces Champagne in second place with 66 million liters. The analysis of the statistical office of the European Union records that in 2020, exports of EU sparkling wines to non-EU countries amounted to 494 million liters.
Export of Italian wines
There has been a significant decrease compared to 2019, mainly caused by the global pandemic; which has greatly affected wine exports, due to total closures. Previously, exports had increased by an average of 8% annually. Regarding the Italian export of sparkling wine our own that closely concerns us, an estimate by Coldiretti records that at the stroke of midnight on 31 December, over 620 million bottles of sparkling wine were uncorked abroad. We have decided a historical record with an increase in 29% compared to last year. At the end of the year, therefore, the all-time high of foreign exports was reached for the first time, for a value of approximately 1,9 billion. W the Italian tricolor bubbles!
