Pope Francis has returned to the Vatican to spend his post-operative convalescence in the Santa Marta residence. The Holy Father left the Policlinico Gemelli in Rome where in recent days he underwent delicate surgery on his abdomen. Sitting in his wheelchair, greeting doctors and patients, the pontiff exclaimed: "I'm alive“, speaking to the microphones of the journalists who were waiting for him at the hospital entrance. Also waiting for him were many faithful who crowded near the Gemelli and who rejoiced by giving him thunderous applause.

So Professor Sergio Alfieri, the surgeon who operated on the Pope, who spoke to reporters who were waiting for the pontiff to leave the hospital. “As regards the Pope's next trips and future commitments, ask him. Anyway he confirmed all the travelindeed he will be able to face them even better because he no longer has the discomforts he had before. He will be a stronger Pope. What did the Pope tell me this morning? Thank you, pray for me, I'm still alive. He wanted to thank everyone. Furthermore, he also had a personal conversation with one of our colleagues who is not well. He really wanted to exercise his priestly ministry – concluded Alfieri – it was a very touching moment ”.
