Pompeii: two more victims of the eruption in 79 AD found

In the past few hours they have been found the remains of two dead bodies in Pompeii during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.

The two victims were together in the excavation area of ​​Regio IX insula 10, where archaeological investigations are underway due to a project to secure the excavation fronts.

Who owns those remains and where were they located?

I remains found are those of a man and a woman, the latter found on the bed next to gold, silver and bronze coins and gold and pearl earrings. The two victims of the eruption were found in a small room used as a temporary bedroom during the renovation work on the house.

That small room where the remains were found represented for them their refuge with the illusion of being able to escape the violence of the eruption and the rain of lapilli that invaded the city and the rest of the house. The room had an access to the large hall which filled with pumice, blocking their ability to escape.

The small room thus became the guardian of the two skeletons and some objects very dear to them, so much so that they kept them close until their death.

Why these findings are important

Thanks to these findings it is possible to analyze the anthropological data relating to the two victims found within the archaeological context that became their tomb and this allows them to recover a large amount of information on the daily life of the ancient Pompeians and their stories.

The footprints in the ash also allowed the furnishings to be reconstructed and where they were at the time of the eruption. Thus it was established presence of a bed, a chest, a bronze candelabra and a table with a marble top, with bronze, glass and ceramic furnishings still positioned in their place.

What activities are underway

At the moment, in addition to the restoration, safety, protection and accessibility works of the archaeological site of Pompeii, sNew excavations are planned in the territory from Civita Giuliana to Villa dei Misteri and to the ancient Oplontis in the municipality of Torre Annunziata.

These excavations give the possibility of reconstructing the last moments of the inhabitants' lives, men, women and children, who died during the catastrophic eruption of 79 AD which made Pompeii an enormous research and restoration site. All the staff working on the site are waiting important developments in archaeological excavations and valorisation of the territory in the coming years, thanks also to the investments made available by the Government.
