A pride for Sicily

The young scientist began her career in Messina, her hometown, then moved to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer in New York, where she earned her doctorate and two postdocs. Patrizia Mondello found that CD4 + T lymphocytes, located within the lymph node follicles, have an important prognostic role. These cells are involved in immunological surveillance against tumors. Their absence increases the risk of disease progression or recurrence and, consequently, reduces survival. With the collaboration of the Mayo Clinic, the doctor has devised a model called "BioFLIPI". It better identifies patients with aggressive disease and helps identify treatment choices. Patrizia Mondello is among the most brilliant young oncologists in the world. Its results make Italy proud and, above all, its Sicily, a land rich in talents.
