The best sweet wine comes from the deep south of Italy. LThe Italian Sommelier Foundation awarded the prize for best sweet wine in Italy to Cantine Pellegrino's Passito di Pantelleria. The Oscar for the category awarded to Nes 2020 produced by the winery, an award that adds to the many awards received in recent years. And which confirm the great results achieved in the various categories of wines white and red.
"It is thanks to the strength and heroic work of our 350 suppliers that Pellegrino is today the market leader in the production of Pantelleria wines - underlined Benedetto Renda, president of the cellars -. In 2021 we equipped the Cellar with the largest private renewable energy photovoltaic system. Currently the only one serving a productive activity on the island. This allows the company to produce a share of energy from renewable sources. Tale to be almost self-sufficient, protecting this fragile and wonderful environment whose beauty we intend to preserve intact. A choice that means translating the word sustainability into concrete actions, in the spirit that has always inspired Cantine Pellegrino".
The production of the passito in Pantelleria
There are many fine wines that Cantina Pellegrino produces on the island of Pantelleria. Dall'Isesi, elegant wine white Pantelleria Doc, Moscato Pantelleria Doc and Passito Pantelleria Doc. It is here that the Zibibbo grape is grown among the sapling vineyards, a Unesco heritage site. The production lasts for many months, with a long process of natural drying on racks, in the sun in the wind, especially in the summer months. Up to obtaining the passito and in particular the Nes, which has been awarded the prestigious award. And it is Pantelleria, the pearl of the Mediterranean, the soul of this wine. The production comes from a tiring work of waiting and constancy.
"I believe this award is the result of years of experience in this very peculiar territory - adds Nicola Poma, one of the three winemakers of the winery -. The knowledge of the terroir gained over many years has guided us in the selection of the best grapes at various altitudes and exposures, from coastal areas to those of high hills. The choice of the finest grapes from an olfactory and gustatory point of view, combined with the skilful use of natural drying techniques, gives Nes that extraordinary freshness and aroma that are the basis of this recognition.iment".
