The rules for descendants of compatriots abroad are changing. In recent days, the Government approved the “citizenship package” which modifies the rules for the recognition of Italian citizenship.

Italians by blood with recognitions only up to the grandfather

A measure not to the advantage of citizens born in Italy to foreign parents, but rather to make it more difficult to grant it to descendants of Italians living abroad. There will be no more ancestry recognitions, but only recognitions up to the grandfather. From a political point of view, there will therefore be no recognition of the much talked about ius soli, nor that of the jus scholae, but it will also be reduced jus sanguinis.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio explained it in detail Tajani who clarified: “the aim is to enhance the effective link between Italy and the citizen abroad. "

The countries with the highest Italian emigration

I Countries with the highest Italian emigration, the Farnesina explained in a note, have seen a strong increase in citizenship recognition in recent years. In the last 10 years, citizens residing abroad have increased from approximately 4,6 million to 6,4 million: an increase of 40% in 10 years.

But which are the nations with the most Italian emigrants? Certainly, from recent surveys, the vast majority of Italian emigrants live in South America (especially in Argentina e Brazil), but among the nations with the largest number of Italian emigrants we also have Switzerland, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Belgium.

A decision that leaves us perplexed

Instead of valorize people who have strong ties with Italy, facilitating their reunion with their homeland, this decision cuts a bridge between Italians abroad and Italy.

The bond between Italy and Italian descendants is often much more deeply felt than that of Italians born and raised in Italy. In these years of work we have noticed so much love towards the Bel Paese felt by many people thousands of kilometres away but close in heart.

We sincerely hope that this decision will not be final, and that common sense will prevail towards the many people who were already moving to obtain citizenship and whose lives changed from one day to the next.

We will continue to follow the story to keep you informed and help as we can.
