Gran Paradiso National Park, the first Italian protected area is celebrating its first hundred years of life this year. Established on 3 December 1922 on the former hunting reserve of King Vittorio Emanuele III, it extends between Valle d'Aosta and Piedmont.

The celebrations for the centenary recorded a rich calendar of events that took place throughout 2022. Events of various kinds that involved the 13 municipalities of the protected area and the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, also born 100 years ago but only officially recognized on 11 January 1923. Over the years the Park has transformed into a tourist destination of great beauty, visited by mountain and nature enthusiasts, by sportsmen and hikers, all aware of how much it is necessary to adopt behaviors useful for the conservation of the ecosystem. The Park itself is today an active protagonist of research, protection and conservation strategies, but also of the fruition of nature itself.
The centenary celebrations recounted the events of the Gran Paradiso, extraordinary and fascinating stories of men, animals and landscapes of incredible beauty. The park covers approximately 70 hectares and, in its vast area, includes the summit of Gran Paradiso, the only peak over 4 meters entirely within Italian territory. The protected area is characterized by typical valleys alpine landscape with glaciers, rocks, larch and fir woods; its symbol is the alpine ibex. The Park Authority promotes various productive activities in line with the agro-forestry-pastoral cultural values, relating to crafts and traditional local architecture. Sports, excursions, ludic-recreational moments, wellness and relaxation: the great beauty of the Gran Paradiso meets and satisfies every need.
