The candidates have in fact contributed to the achievement of one or more Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.

The reasons for Nicola Gratteri's candidacy for the 2021 Win Win Awards

As finalists for the Win Win Gothenburg Sustainability Award 2021 this year they have been chosen five icons of world anti-corruption, selected from 64 candidates di 34 countries. Nicola Gratteri, chief prosecutor of the anti-mafia trial that led to the arrest of more than one 350 Guests related to Ndrangheta, is the representative ofItaly. As stated on the motivations of the Swedish jury, Gratteri's appointment is due «to his determination to put the safety of the community before his own, living under the constant threat of reprisals from the criminal organization he has decided to fight. Gratteri's story shows the importance of well-functioning institutions in countries and how these must be taken seriously and used correctly».

Nobel Prize for sustainability, the other candidates

In addition to Nicola Gratteri, to contend the Nobel Prize for sustainability they will be Icelandic Johannes Stefansson and the Nigerian activist Hamzat Lawal (but not only). The first revealed the corruption scandal of "Short Files" between Iceland e Namibia. The second worked to ensure transparency on Nigerian public spending and international aid funds. The other two finalists are the non-profit organization Integrity Watch Afghanistan (IWA) And the International consortium of investigative journalists (ICIJ). The ultimate prize is a million Swedish kronor (i.e. almost 100mila euros). The proclamation will take place during an official ceremony which should take place at October 2021. If Nicola Gratteri were to win, his name would be joined by other personalities who have received this prestigious award, such as the US vice president Al Gore and the former secretary ofONU Kofi Annan. Italy has always been proud of Gratteri. Its nomination for the 2021 Win Win Gothenburg Sustainability Award is further proof of its worth as hero of anti-corruption.
