Piazza Armerina mosaics, the charm of the Corridor of the Great Hunt
Dating back to the XNUMXrd and XNUMXth century AD, and perfectly preserved, the mosaics of Piazza Armerina have contributed to making the Villa in Piazza Armerina a unique place. And they led it, in 1997, to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site Sicilia. Divided between 48 spaces and rooms, the villa testifies through its mosaics the history of the Roman Empire. As soon as they enter the entrance, lucky visitors can admire a floor surrounded by sumptuous columns, with a fountain in the center. From here, you can access all areas of the villa. Among the most important spaces we find the Corridor of the Great Hunt: it is here that the mosaics of Piazza Armerina give their best. With its 66 meters in length, the corridor tells and describes through those colored pieces the capture of the animals brought to Rome, and destined for the shows held at the Colosseum. Not only that: it also shows the geography of the Roman Empire in all its territories, from Morocco to India.
The other rooms
Through the Corridor of the Great Hunt it is possible to access the rooms of the dominus. Preceded by a depicting room Ulysses offering stunning wine to the Cyclops Polyphemus, we find the bedroom, represented by the Mosaic of Seduction. Continuing we arrive at the studio, characterized by its mosaics depicting seasonal fruit. Finally, there is the large hall which, with its precious polychrome marble floors, was used for the formalization of major events. Going on with the visit of the villa, you reach the dining rooms. Composed of the kitchens, and the bedrooms of the children and servants, these rooms tell through their mosaics scenes of hunting and Roman history. In the rooms of the Otium it is possible to admire "girls in bikinis“, One of the best known mosaics. Young women with low-cut and skimpy dresses play games: the best one was rewarded with a palm tree and a laurel wreath. Continuing you can also admire the music and poetry room, and an elliptical courtyard located outside. Everything has an ancient, surprising beauty that leaves its visitors enchanted.
