In the mountains in the province of Foggia there is a town with a legendary history, whose roots go back to the XNUMXth century. Monte Sant'Angelo, a town of about 12 inhabitants, dates back to the year 1000 as an urban center. The previous hagiographic tradition, however, brings its foundation back to about four centuries earlier. It happened when the archangel Michael revealed himself to the bishop of Siponto asking him to dedicate the cave the Christian cult to his name.

In Monte Sant'Angelo, the Unesco heritage sanctuary

In fact, in the country there is the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011, also called Celeste Basilica, because it was considered directly consecrated by the Archangel Michael. Four are in fact the apparitions that are attributed to the Basilica. The first three at the end of the fifth century, while the last in the middle of the seventeenth century, when the Archangel defeated the plague by intervening from the Basilica.

If in 871 the sanctuary was desecrated by the Saracens, in the following centuries Christianity, reunited under the insignia of the Crusades, meant that the basilica became the destination of various pilgrimages. The city was a destination for many saints and prominent personalities of the peninsula's Christianity. Bernardo di Chiaravalle, Saint Catherine of Sweden and Padre Pio. The latter visited it by adding these words: "Before going here to me ... go to Monte Sant'Angelo and invoke the help and protection of the Archangel Michael". Finally in 1177 William II, King of Sicily, gave Monte Sant'Angelo to his young wife, Giovanna of England, appealing it Honor Montis Sancti Angeli.
