Stories e legends they have been part of Italian folklore since very remote times. Indeed, it can be said that Italy, more than other places in the world, has a charm given precisely by its diversity. In short, the mysteries are different for each region, and each of them is more inexplicable than the other. Some have found clarifications in science or physics, but others still remain a mystery to those who come across them. Today we talk about the very special mystery of Borzonasca, in the sunny Liguria!
The mystery of the face carved in stone: Borzonasca and its secrets ...
In Borzonasca, a peaceful and pleasant site in the province of Genoa, a rather curious mystery was born. It is still not possible to provide logical or at least rational explanations for what has occurred there. There are those who praise a work of aliens, and those who shrug their shoulders without having the slightest idea what to think. But what is this strange mystery? Well, on a mountain near the Monte Aione refuge, there is a rather unique stone. It looks like a classic Menhir (megaliths dating back to the Neolithic) of which Liguria is full, but perhaps it hides something else.
This peculiar monolith is truly one of a kind: it is enough to approach it with a compass, to see its magnetic needle deviate in a decisive way. In addition, it seems that strange noises are heard in those parts, the origin of which is unknown.
Furthermore, the sharp shape of the rock and the material it is made of make it a naturally attractive spot for lightning. According to some studies, the rock would be made of Iherzolite, emerged from the earth's mantle. Such material is highly magnetic, which is why compasses they would go crazy in its vicinity. This stone, called Borghese stone, it would even be able to emit sounds: if it were struck by a hammer, it would ring like a bell. These strange attitudes, although partially explained by geologists, do not cease to surprise. In fact, more recently, right on the rock, even human faces would have been seen! Indeed, there are those who believe they have glimpsed a portion of stone a duplicate of the face of Christ from the famous Turin Shroud. As if that weren't enough, inside the Borghese stone houses some graffiti, of which, however, neither the origin nor the interpretation is known.
When mystery meets ... science!
In addition to being a very interesting place for mystery lovers, this site is also very attractive for geologists. The special properties of the stone therefore seem to be explained thanks to the geological studies that have been conducted. In fact, when one arrives next to this monolith, the compass needle comes deviated by more than 100 degrees from the original north, a circumstance caused by the high content of magnetite. If we look at the science, we find that these intrusive igneous rocks called lherzolytic peridotites they come from the sub-continental mantle.
These progressively went up in the Jurassic, surfacing on the bottom of an ancient ocean (the Piedmontese Ligurian Ocean), which has now disappeared. In any case, it must be said that if an explanation can be given for some characteristics of the Borghese stone, for others this work is difficult. Can we certainly clarify the reasons that push the stone to emit sounds, or to attract the needle of the compass, but the mysterious faces that are hidden there? A mystery that still today attracts visitors and onlookers from all over, just waiting to be revealed. And you? What are you waiting for?
