Italy is the ideal film set for films of all kinds, from drama to comedy. Among the many Italian cities where the stories narrated in our films are set, the most recurrent are of Rome, Milan e Napoli. However, there are also other beloved cities, such as for example Matera, chosen as a set for the making of many Hollywood films (not always set in the Lucanian city). Below we have written our list of best 2021 films set in Italy. Most of these are Italian productions, but there are also three major international blockbusters.
2021 films set in Rome
Rome stars some of the best 2021 films set in Italy. One of these is "Freak Out", directed by Gabriele mainetti, with Aurora Giovinazzo, Peter Castellitto e Claudio Santamaria. The film is set in the Rome of the 1943, in full Second World War. The protagonists are four "freak phenomena" of a circus (or the "freak"). After the disappearance of their leader, alone and without a purpose, they will try to escape from the capital, now tormented by the horrors of war.
Another film set in Rome is "The Catholic school”, Film directed by Stefano Mordini, with Jasmine trinca, Valeria Golino e Scamarcio. It is a film based on the novel of the same name by Edward Albinati (winner of the Witch award in 2016). The background of the story is a neighborhood of the "Rome well”Of the 70s, where a private Catholic school was built. Films set in Milan
"House of gucci”Is certainly one of the most anticipated 2021 films set in Italy in recent months. Directed by Ridley Scott, the film is set in Milan of 1995 and tells the tragic story of the murder of Maurizio gucci (interpreted by A), commissioned by his then wife Patrizia reggiani (interpreted by Lady Gaga). The story does not take place only in the "Milan to drink". Among the other places that are the background to the story there are also Gressoney Saint Jean, one of the most famous ski destinations in the Valle d'Aosta.
"Supereroi" is a film of Paolo Genovese, with protagonists Alessandro Borghi e Jasmine trinca. It is based on the novel of the same name by the director himself. The film is set in Milan and tells the story of a love 20 years long, between aaspiring cartoonist and a physics professor. The title was chosen because, as Genovese himself says, "you have to be superheroes to love yourself a lifetime". Milan also goes well with history, because due to the change of the city in the last 20 years it also accompanies the change of the protagonists.
2021 films set in Naples
Winner of the Silver Lion to the 78th Venice International Film Festival, "It was the hand of God”Is an autobiographical film directed by Paolo Sorrentino. The main character is fabietto schisa (Sorrentino's alter ego, played by Filippo scotti). The story, set in the Naples in the 80s, tells the sad story of the death of Sorrentino's parents (played by Toni Servillo e Theresa Saponangelo), who lost their lives in an accident caused by a carbon monoxide leak. The film was selected to represent Italy to the Oscar 2022 including best foreign film.
"The hidden child" is a film of Roberto Andò, with Silvio Orlando e Joseph Pirozzi and it is the adaptation of the novel by Andò himself. The main character is Gabriel Santoro, a music teacher from the Naples well, who has decided to live in solitude in the Spanish Neighborhoods. One day her routine is shaken by Ciro, a 10-year-old son of neighbors Camorra, who asks him for help. Gabriele will then decide to help the child hide in his home to save him from his own family.
2021 films set in Italy (international)
"On Time To Die"Is the last film dedicated to007 agent, Directed by Cary Fukunaga with Daniel Craig e Léa Seydoux, released in theaters in September 2021. The film is set in the fictional city of Civita Lucania, created by the union of Matera, Sapri, Maratea e Gravina in Puglia. “No time to Die” also marks Daniel Craig's latest performance as James Bond.
Last but not least, in the list of the best films of 2021 set in Italy there is also "Luca". It is about the beloved Disney-Pixar movie revelation of the summer of 2021. The direction is signed by Enrico casarosa, who pays homage to his Liguria. Luca is in fact set in portorosso (fictional village inspired by Monterosso, in Cinque Terre). The protagonist is Luca, a sea monster who lives off the coast of Portorosso and who would like to discover the world of humans. Together with his friend Alberto (also a sea monster) e Giulia, a girl daughter of a fisherman from the village, Luca will experience an unforgettable summer that will change his life and that of the inhabitants of Portorosso forever.
