Quirinal: Sergio Mattarella re-elected to the presidency of the Republic with 759 votes, is the second head of state most voted in history, after Sandro Pertini. The partisan president remains in first place on the podium with 832 consents. After the election in Parliament during the eighth ballot, the presidents of the two chambers Roberto Fico and Elisabetta Casellati went to the Quirinale to officially inform Mattarella. The outgoing president, for his part, had already rented an apartment in Parioli to move to at the end of his first seven-year term. In fact, he had repeated several times that he did not want to accept a second term. But the lack of agreement between the majority and opposition forces convinced him to once again guarantee his availability out of a 'sense of responsibility', for the good of the country. Now the oath of the president is awaited, which will be held in Parliament in joint session on 3 February next at 15.30
Mattarella al Quirinale: first and foremost the expectations and hopes of the Italians
After learning of the re-election, the president gave a short but incisive speech. He then immediately met with the presidents and secretaries general of the Parliament. This is the text of the first official speech of the Mattarella bis: “I thank the presidents of the Chamber and the Senate for their communication. I would like to thank the parliamentarians and the delegates of the Regions for the trust expressed in me. The difficult days passed for the election to the presidency of the Republic during the grave emergency that we are still going through, on the health, economic and social fronts, call for a sense of responsibility and respect for Parliament's decisions. These conditions require not shirking the duties to which one is called and, of course, they must prevail over other considerations and different personal perspectives, with the commitment to interpret the expectations and hopes of our fellow citizens ”.
