The splendid Italian treasures continue to travel around the world. Here, then, is that the MANN (National Archaeological Museum of Naples) peeps into Japan, to be precise a Tokyo, where is the National Museum it hosts historical artifacts of immense value. An extraordinary way to celebrate the oldest museum in Japan, which blows out 150 candles, kicking off its first international exhibition since the beginning of the pandemic.

Pompeii, Campania in Tokyo

This project, Pompeii, was made possible thanks to the collaboration with the Pompeii Archaeological Park, active in promoting knowledge of the antiquities of the Vesuvian area in the international arena. It is as if a red thread unites the two cities, united by the fire of the volcanoes. The set-up made allows a real journey through time. The contextualization is done in an excellent way, making the most of the 160 artifacts from Italy, divided into five sections.

Great interest, considering how at the box office they have already been detached 3500 tickets in just two days, also considering the severe restrictions due to Covid: “With Japan we have embarked on a very important cultural journey. - These are the words of Paolo Giulierini, director of Mann at AGI - It all started two years ago. It is the first time that such an important core of the MANN permanent collections has arrived in Japan ”. An exhibition of enormous importance for the locals, considering how such iconic pieces of the Pompeian imaginary have never been exhibited there. Here are a few key elements of the exhibition:

  • Bronze of the Faun
  • Dionysus with panther
  • Peplophoros in white marble
  • Exclusive reconstruction of the walls of the Villa of Cicero in Pompeii

“The operation set up was very complex. The Japanese who try to interpret our past exploit radically different cultural codes. This does not generate immediate recognition, as for a European. For this reason we have focused on two common themes, the volcano and the earthquake, which unite West and East. The story of the tragedy of Pompeii, caused by the earthquake and Vesuvius, through a contextualization of the objects on display. All this favors a dialogue. For both peoples, in fact, the volcano is a combination of fear and respect ".
