Luciano Spalletti is the new coach of the National Italian. The 64-year-old former Napoli coach from Montespertoli (Florence), the new blue coach officially takes over from the outgoing Roberto Mancini. For him a contract until 2026, the year of the next World Cup. The agreement will take effect from 1 September, and provides for a net annual fee of 3,2 million euros.

Formalized agreement

The agreement between the FIGC and Luciano Spalletti was reached and made official through a press release. “The Italian Football Federation announces that it has reached an agreement with Spalletti for the position of coach of the Italian national team – reads the document -. The Tuscan coach will take up his role starting from 1 September 2023 and the official presentation will take place on the occasion of the Azzurri meeting, scheduled for the first days of September, at the Federal Technical Center in Coverciano". The new coach will be supported by three trusted collaborators: the assistants Daniel Baldini e Marco Domenichini and the athletic trainer Francesco Sinatti. In the new blue staff, announced last August 4, they will remain Gigi Buffon, head of delegation, e Andrea Barzagli, technical assistant.

Gravina welcomes Spalletti

The president of the FIGC, Gabriele Gravina, commented on the agreement with the new coach: “We welcome Spalletti, the national team needed a great coach and I'm very happy that he accepted the technical guidance of the Azzurri. His enthusiasm and his expertise will be fundamental for the challenges that await Italy in the coming months ”.

The unpaid clause

A question mark still remains over the question of the 3 million euros that Spalletti should have paid to the club Aurelius DeLaurentis to be able to coach another team. The new coach has in fact decided to sign the contract that binds him to the Italian national team despite the clause not yet paid to Napoli. How will the matter be resolved for the coach? For now we only know that the FIGC will be extraneous to any lawsuit.
