Lorenzo Sassaro, 16 years old from Vicenza, has discovered a new variable star in the constellation of Carena. Definitely an exceptional discovery, made even more extraordinary by the young age of the discoverer, a student of the Trissino di Valdagno high school. The budding astronomer carried out his astronomical observation and research activity at the Marana di Crespadoro Observatory, Space Explorer Center (MarSEC), still in the province of Vicenza.

Lorenzo Sassaro discovers a new star

The discovery has already been approved by the international organization for variable stars (Vsx, Variable Star Index dell'Aavso - American Association Variable Stars Observers). To guide Lorenzo in his research experts Ivo Peretto and Stefano Lora. The new variable star bears the name of its own discoverer, as well as that scientific assigned to her by international community. It is located 1.480 light years from Earth with a temperature of 10.800 degrees; its luminosity changes at the rate of one and a half days. Thanks to the great result obtained by the young researcher and the great dedication shown by other young astronomers, the MarSEC thought of opening its second catalog of variable stars. A decision taken by the contact person of the research section "Variable Stars" of the Uai (Italian Amateur Astronomers' Union), Claudio Lopresti, and shared by all.
