The coat of arms of San Benedetto del Tronto: an excursus on the city's origins

The municipal coat of arms is typically used to narrate and describe the dignity, history, ancient origins, personality, and image of a municipality. Indeed, that of a city. The coat of arms of the coastal town of San Benedetto del Tronto summarizes the most important events. And in composing the city's coat of arms, the most significant events in San Benedetto's history were taken into account. In fact, the coat of arms would symbolize the diversity of two important moments in the country's history: the martyrdom of the patron saint and the urban birth of the city itself with its peculiar architectural symbols.

Characteristics of the coat of arms

In particular, many historical documents have handed down the coat of arms of the Adriatic city. Specifically, on the silver background of the municipal coat of arms, granted by Decree of the President of the Council of Ministers on 10 November 1948, stands out a warrior, which he holds in one hand a sword and in the other a branch of palm. Furthermore, the warrior is placed in front of a tower overlooking the sea. The warrior in question is none other than Benedict, the patron saint. Here then is the saint standing out in the city coat of arms with the sword and the palm of martyrdom, embraced by two garlands of leaves tied together with a tricolour ribbon.

As a backdrop to the saint and worthy of note is the Torre dei Gualtieri, better known as the Tower, which represents the city's symbol par excellence, the architectural element that best defines it. And a glimpse of the sea, where the city's maritime culture takes root, is a must. Since their origins, which occurred in the military as a distinctive sign, coats of arms have been customarily created depicting plants, weapons, and warriors. The municipal coat of arms signifies the identity of a community and it encompasses the history, traditions, glories, and hopes of a country. As they say: a picture is worth a thousand words.
