Il sustainable tourism in Puglia is confirmed to be in strong expansion, thanks to the growing success of its walks. The region is becoming one of the most popular destinations in Italy for those who love slow tourism, as demonstrated by the data presented in Milan during the fair “Do the right thing!”. On this occasion, the Puglia Region and the Regional Tourism Agency Pugliapromozione presented the report “Paths of Puglia 2024”, which highlights a significant increase in the number of travellers.

Regional Councillor Lopane underlined the importance of this trend: «Puglia is now among the most popular destinations in Italy for walking, a result confirmed by unprecedented numbers».

Who are the wayfarers of the Apulian paths? The data analysis shows an interesting picture of the origin of the walkers. The highest percentage is represented by lumbar, which constitute 22,2% of the total, followed by Piedmont (13,8%) and by the Apulians themselves (13,8%), who for the first time surpass the Venetians (10,9%). This data suggests that experiential tourism on the Apulian walks is becoming an increasingly popular option also for the inhabitants of the region. A key indicator of the growing interest in the Apulian walks is the 48% increase in credentials distributed in 2024 compared to the previous year. This document, which certifies the completion of a route, is requested by an ever-increasing number of wayfarers, but the figure could be even higher considering those who undertake the walk without requesting it.

The most popular walks in Puglia

The data shows that some paths are driving the overall growth of the phenomenon:

  • The Cammino Materano (Via Peuceta and Via Ellenica) is confirmed as the most popular, registering an increase of +37,5%. The variety of landscapes, ranging from the Murge to Matera, and the improved infrastructure make this route particularly attractive.
  • The Via Francigena, a historic pilgrimage route, recorded a notable +25,7%, also thanks to investments in signage and services dedicated to travellers.
  • The Cammino del Salento consolidates its position among the most sought-after destinations with an increase of +23,5%, thanks to the combination of breathtaking coastal landscapes and historic villages.
  • The Two Seas Route, which connects the Ionian Sea with the Adriatic, is growing by +7,9%, attracting more and more hikers fascinated by the experience of crossing the region from coast to coast.
  • The Walk of Don Tonino Bello, which pays homage to the figure of the bishop of Salento, grows by +3,7%.
  • The Path of Peace, dedicated to reflection and spirituality, records a slight but significant increase of +1,5%.

A model of sustainable tourism in expansion, as these numbers confirm. The success of these itineraries is not just a question of numbers, but also represents a sign of a cultural transformation in the way of traveling. More and more people are choosing slow, sustainable and authentic tourism, which allows them to discover the region in a profound and environmentally friendly way.
