Forget about spring: winter could bring a final blow to our Peninsula. As happened in the last few days, now a new irruption of cold air descending from Scandinavia could affect central Europe and, marginally, also Italy in the second ten days of March.

According to the main weather models, an unstable phase is expected with a possible drop in temperatures and the return of snow down to low altitudes in the North - North East, although the reliability of this forecast must be monitored day by day.

Cold air coming: European and Italian scenario

A very cold air mass, currently forecast over Scandinavia, will tend to slide towards central Europe between March 12 and 13. Italy will be on the edge of this irruption, but the interaction with depression vortices could capture part of this cold air, generating atmospheric instability and a sharp drop in temperature.

The GFS model projections for Thursday, March 13 show a partial breakthrough of the cold even on our territory, although disturbed by the action of western currents. The average of the scenarios confirms the possibility of a cold tongue that will try to reach the Alps.

Cold, yes, but not for long: the return of mildness

If winter tries to reappear with a final cold spell, its duration could be limited. After March 13, in fact, Atlantic currents could return to dominate the meteorological scenario, breaking the winter configuration and bringing back milder, albeit unstable, conditions. This is, therefore, a meteorological phase to be followed carefully in the coming days. The oscillations of the forecast models could confirm or reduce the impact of the late cold on Italy. One thing is certain: winter does not seem to want to give way completely to spring.
