Edvard Munch's works return to Italy after almost 40 years

After almost 40 years the works of the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch return to Italyia.

From 14 September to 26 January next Milan will host paintings and drawings by Edvard Munch at Royal Palace and subsequently, from the February 18 to the 2 June 2025, it will too Rome in the beautiful setting of Palazzo Bonaparte.

The influence of the Italian Renaissance on Munch's works

The curator of the exhibition, Patricia Berman, wants to give a "private" story of the most beloved expressionist painter, highlighting the influence that the Italian Renaissance had on his works. It was precisely in Italy that he painted the grave of his uncle Pter Andreas Munch, one of the paintings that can be seen in the Italian exhibition. 

As for other Norwegian artists, Italy has always been an important point of reference for Munch because it was his own in Rome that he saw for the first time the works of all the great Renaissance artists such as Michelangelo, while in Florence he created a copy of Raphael's self-portrait.

The director of the Munch Museum in Oslo which now hosts 1.200 works, or approximately two thirds of its overall production, explains that the exhibition that will open in Milan and Rome will be very complex and he hopes that it will have the same success as the one recently exhibited in Paris where, in just three months, it was visited by 730 thousand people.
