Lioness it is an ancient village at high altitude, 1000 meters high, in the Lazio province of Rieti.

Full of noble palaces, ancient city gates and remains of walls and surrounded by meadows, woods and valleys, streams and an invigorating air.

One of the entrances of Leonessa, also called 'city of St. Joseph', is the Spoleto Gate, a 1300th century crenellated tower, made of pink stone, which frames Corso San Giuseppe Leonessano.

La Spoleto Gate together with Aquila Gate  and the Angevin Tower, dominate Leonessa, with its almond-shaped plan, and are what remains of the original defensive system of Charles I of Anjou.

The medieval village, renovated in the sixteenth century, invites you to stroll among noble palaces, churches and chapels.

It is worth going to see the Margaritian Fountain commissioned by Ottavio Farnese and Margherita of Austria in 1552 and, at the end of the long Corso, the Church of San Pietro and the Convent, with the elegant two-tiered loggia.

Do not miss the Church of San Francesco with 14th and 15th century paintings inside.

At Christmas lights, colors and Christmas sweets

Lioness is a mountain town which, in winter, transforms into a fairy-tale land.

In the central square stands the Christmas tree, decorated with lights and colors and surrounded by markets, the delightful wooden houses with handcrafted products and Christmas sweets.

The Corso is suggestive, where, before the end of the year, the traditional 'Polentata al Corso' will take place, to meet outdoors and exchange greetings while enjoying the typical polenta and other local specialities.

A series of initiatives will take place until January 7, all of which can be consulted on the Proloco Facebook page or on the website: leonessa.org
