On the night of April 16, 2025, at 3:26 am, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake hits Southern Ionian Sea. According to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the epicenter was located about 50 km from the southern coast of Calabria, at a depth of 48 km. The shock was clearly felt in several Sicilian cities, including Catania, Syracuse, Ragusa, Messina, Modica, Augusta, Acireale, Avola and Noto, as well as Reggio Calabria.

The situation after the earthquake

No damage to people or things was reported, but the event generated concern among the population. Many residents, awakened by the earthquake, contacted the firefighters to receive information, and some poured into the streets, visibly frightened.

Authorities have said there is no danger of a tsunami and are continuing to monitor the situation. The affected area is located in a high seismic risk area, where the African plate collides with the Eurasian plate, causing frequent earthquakes.
