The waterfall of Isola del Liri

The tourist can see the Great Waterfall, or Vertical, which when in full has a bursting flow, and the Valcatoio waterfall, twenty-seven meters high. This is possible because the river splits into two arms where it is strategically located the Boncompagni Viscogliosi castle, giving rise to two natural jumps. The left arm flows into the Grande waterfall, imposing and much more scenic, compared to the waterfall that forms from the right arm. The Valcatoio waterfall is less spectacular because the waters are captured to power an electricity production plant; the jump is not perfectly vertical, but follows an inclination.
The Liri paper mills
The river that flows sinuously from the plain of Sora creates a sort of island in the center of the city known for its waters. The historic center of Isola del Liri is one of the most photographed places in the surrounding area, and it is really worth admiring it at sunset; when colors and lights form an indescribable spectacle on the water. Because of the wealth of water, in this territoriothere were power plants and paper mills that have left a trace of modern archeology. Recently an old Béranger-Coste paper mill was also unearthed, the ideal location for the “Museum of the Paper and Telecommunications Civilization”. Suggestive and pleasant is a walk towards the River Park.
The Isola waterfall in the Louvre
With a pleasant walk from Corso Roma arriving at the River Park, among the remains of ancient paper machines; until you gain step after step to the Valcatoio waterfall. One day is more than enough to admire this Ciociara town which is located between Sora and a stone's throw from the Abruzzo border. Characteristic restaurants can make your stay very pleasant with the typical Ciociara cuisine. Many artists also entertained themselves in these areas, painting the famous waterfall, such as Philipp Hackert for example, who painted it returning from Abruzzo. Or I. Bidault, whose painting depicting Isola del Liri, is exhibited in the Louvre Museum in Paris. In Isola del Liri you can visit the Boncompagni Viscogliosi Castle, which was a medieval fortress, which in ancient times dominated the whole plain. The castle once protected the valley, and today it displays beautiful frescoes, showing a splendid park.
How to reach Isola del Liri
Very impressive is the tower of the fortress which dates back to the fifteenth century. The castle is private and can only be visited on some special occasions. Why not pay a visit to the Church of Santa Maria della Forma, the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie, the collegiate church of San Lorenzo Martire. To reach Isola del Liri just take a bus departing from Roma Anagnina to Sora, or take the train to Frosinone. From the capital of Ciociaria you can take a bus to Sora. There is also the Avezzano-Roccasecca railway, starting from Roma Termini, changing at Roccasecca. The station is located on Isola Superiore, not Isola Inferiore. Those traveling by car and leaving from Rome can take the A1 motorway, Frosinone exit. You can take the SS dei Monti Lepini towards Sora and, after having crossed the Frosinone-Sora highway, exit at Isola del Liri Ovest.
