Jo DiMaggio
During the era of the first wave of migration in the United States, the Di Maggio were among those who wanted to realize the great American dream. In 1902 they left their home in Sicily to Island of Women and emigrated to Martinez, a small town in California. On November 25, 1914, their son Joe was born who, as a child, showed a great talent for baseball. He starts playing with the San Francisco Seals where he stays for four seasons. On November 21, 1934 he signs a contract with i New York Yankees and he will play with them throughout his career, first with the number 9 shirt, then with the number 5. The champion has married twice, with actress Dorothy Arnold and with the extraordinary Marilyn Monroe from which he divorced within a year. The two remained good friends forever.
In 1955 Jo Di Maggio is in Rome and decides to go to his parents' country of origin. He arrives in Isola delle Femmine and looks for the mayor who tells him the story of the Di Maggio family. After 38 years from his first visit, at the age of 78, Joe is back in Rome where, at the Farnesina, he receives the honorary citizenship of Isola delle Femmine.
