Imago Augusti: there are two portrait heads of the emperor Augustus discovered during recent archaeological investigations conducted in Rome and Isernia. The portrait of the young Octavian, who later becomes Augustus, and that of the first emperor of Rome already awarded the honorific title of Augustus, which becomes an integral part of his name. These are the subjects of the exhibition “Imago Augusti. Two new portraits of Augustus of Rome and Isernia".

The project stems from the scientific collaboration between the Capitoline Superintendency for Cultural Heritage and the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the Molise. United by the exceptional discovery of two portraits of Augustus recently discovered a Roma e Isernia. Two works that due to their high iconographic and stylistic value, they can offer the public a valid and interesting contribution in the field of studies on the image and history of the ever-present figure of the emperor. There are many elements in common between the two works, starting from the recent and unexpected discovery respectively in the years 2019 and 2021 during archaeological investigations in the central areas of Rome, in the Trajan Forum, and in Isernia, in the presumed area of ​​the ancient forum .

For these aspects, the Imago Augusti exhibition, after the Roman stage at Museum of Imperial Forums in Trajan's Markets, will also be set up in Isernia from December 2023, in the Archaeological Museum of Santa Maria delle Monache. The exhibition itinerary develops the themes linked to the two portraits: the discovery, the contexts and ways of reusing the works, the iconography and the political value of the portraits, the figure of the emperor. All these contents are offered in an immersive way, through the use of video projections that allow you to enter the excavation in via Alessandrina, travel through the Molise landscapes up to Isernia and, finally, relive the emotion of the two unexpected discoveries.

An exhibition accessible to people with disabilities

Finally, the exhibition is proposed as an accessible cultural enhancement project. Thanks to the dedicated service of the Social Policies and Health Department – ​​Personal Services Department, entrusted to the Social Cooperative Onlus Signs of Integration – Lazio, the texts of the dramatized dialogue and of the didactic panels were translated into LIS (Italian Sign Language), recorded and usable for free through QR code.

At the same time, to allow the visually impaired to use and move independently in the exhibition halls, life-size synthetic marble copies of the two portraits of Augustus were created on the 3D models, with captions in Italian/English and Braille alphabet and a plan with the itinerary of the exhibition in Italian e Braille alphabet. The didactic offer will be completed by guided tours (to be defined) accompanied by specialized operators and integrated laboratories.
Also scheduled after the summer is the new calendar of “Tuesday at Trajan's” dedicated to in-depth analysis of issues relating to the exhibition and, more generally, to the figure of Augustus.
