The Sila Train, the historic one, is about to start again steam locomotive running through the woods of the famous Calabrian plateau. The ancient and suggestive means of transport will return to snort on the rails starting from next Saturday. Three races scheduled for this month: July 24, 25 and 31, to the delight of young and old.
A journey through wild and unspoiled landscapes
The Sila Train will once again travel through the magnificent and centuries-old woods of National Park, to offer anyone a unique tourist itinerary. The locomotive, after having undergone a recent extraordinary maintenance by the workers of Ferrovie della Calabria, is ready to resume its run among the fairytale landscapes of the Sila. Enchanting, wild and uncontaminated places, where nature reigns supreme.
Unique emotion
The Sila Train starts again on 24th July from the station Snuff. After many years, he relives the ancient journey through the woods and the spectacular tourist resorts of the Sila National Park. A natural heritage that is characterized by the diversity and beauty of the landscapes, the variety of animal and plant species. On board the locomotive, seated on the vintage carriages of Ferrovie della Calabria, passengers will be able to experience a unique emotion and experience the sensation of traveling back in time. The itinerary includes a passage from the well-known locality of Camigliatello Silano, a stop at the station of Silvana Mansio-Saint Nicholas (the highest in Italy, located at 1404 meters above sea level), and then return to Moccone.
The origin
The idea of creating a Sila Train, with a tourist purpose, comes from a proposal put forward by the Ferrovie in Calabria Association to the Ferrovie della Calabria. Initially another locomotive, the FCL LM4, diesel, equipped with three carriages, is used because it is available. In the first years of service, its purple-red livery with yellow stripes was changed to green-gray. Subsequently, with the restoration of the Borsing 353 locomotive and another carriage, a new composition was prepared. The train travels every Sunday, and in summer also on Saturdays, with races that from Moccone or Camigliatello Silano reach Silvana Mansio and come back. In 1926 the steam locomotive was put into service FCL 353, of German design.
The trip
To travel on the Sila Train you must have a ticket, which can be purchased online on the site www.trenodellasila.it by 8.30 on the day of travel or, alternatively, directly on the train itself. For children there is a reduction in the price. The journey is also allowed for pets, as long as they are kept in special carriers or, in the case of medium-large dogs, as long as they have a muzzle and a leash. You also need to bring your pet's health card with you. Also for four-legged friends there is a reduction in the rate.
La Sila, a magical place
The Sila Plateau extends between the provinces of Cosenza, Catanzaro and Crotone. Its territory, of over 150 thousand hectares, offers unique natural riches. An example is the National Park, the oldest in the whole region and among the top five born in Italy. In addition to it, it is worth visiting the Bankruptcy reserve, which houses the so-called "Giants of the Sila", imposing larch pici. Alongside the scenic beauty, also characterized by the presence of three artificial lakes: Arvo, Cruet e Blindness, the plateau is home to beautiful tourist resorts which, especially in summer, attract many tourists. I am an example of this Lorica, Camigliatello Silano, Mancuso village e Palumbo village. This spectacular area is also known for the goodness of its typical products, for the seasonal presence of porcini mushrooms and for local crafts. Many species of animals have found their natural habitat in this magnificent place, including wolves, deer and various birds of prey. From Saturday, thanks to the Sila Train, it will be possible to take a tour in this enchanting place and admire its countless beauties at 360 degrees.
