The Urban Park of the Palmenti di Pietragalla (Potenza) is a jewel of Basilicata. Located in the historic center of the small town of Pietragalla, it is an enchanting place where nature blends with history within a breathtaking landscape. Over 200 buildings are visible here, examples of rural architecture, which were used for the production of wine. Now disused, they worked until the end of the 70s.
The ancient millstones, witnesses of the winemaking traditions
The Palmenti Urban Park takes its name from the stone structures that in the past were used for pressing grapes during the harvest. These constructions, dating back to the 19th century, are unique and original forms of rock architecture. Restored and transformed into small stone caves that wind along the path of the park, they create a truly evocative atmosphere.
Inside they are still visible the rooms in which the must was pressed and fermented in special tanks (palmenti, precisely), until the wine was obtained which, poured into barrels, was transported to the local cellars. Recently renovated, the Pietragalla millstones are testimony to ancient winemaking traditions. Inside there is an atrium with a tank for pressing grapes. Adjacent to it there is the fermentation tank, connected through a channel in such a way as to allow the flow of the must.
A place of tranquility, surrounded by greenery
The Palmenti di Pietragalla Urban Park is not only a place of historical interest, but also an oasis of uncontaminated nature. Here it is possible to walk among centuries-old trees and green meadows, admiring the surrounding environment and enjoying the peace and tranquility that reigns in this place. The park also offers numerous services for visitors: picnic areas, ping-pong tables, children's games, trekking and mountain bike paths.
In summer, cultural events, concerts and theatrical performances are organized here which enliven the park and make it a place of meetings and socialization for the whole community. Thanks to its natural beauty, history and visitor services, the park is an ideal place to spend a day outdoors, in close contact with nature.
