The bell tower of Curon, which emerges alone from the waters of the artificial lake of Resia, in the province of Bolzano, has over time become a symbol of Trentino Alto Adige. Dating back to the 14th century, it was the bell tower of the small Romanesque church of Curon Venosta, the town that was entirely submerged by water in 1950, following the construction of a dam.
The only visible trace of the submerged village, it attracts thousands of tourists every year. Its presence evokes a sense of mystery and magic. Many wonder how it has remained intact despite being in the water for over 70 years. The bell tower of Curon and the dam that has made it a unique tourist attraction represent a warning to respect the environment and a point of reference for anyone who wants to immerse themselves in the uncontaminated nature of the Alps.
Legendary story
The history of the Curon bell tower has become legendary. According to what is said, it is still possible to hear the sound of its bells today. This would occur on stormy days or during the night, as if the chimes wanted to remember the sad end of the submerged town.
The dam that caused the flooding of the village of Curon Venosta was built in the 50s for the need for water supply and energy production. It led to the creation of the artificial lake of Resia, but the consequences were very serious for the inhabitants of the village. The water completely submerged the 163 houses and lands of the town centre, which rest at a depth of 22 metres. The event was devastating for the nearly 150 families who lost their belongings. Half of these families were forced to emigrate. Others, leaving their homes, moved a few kilometers north, where the town was rebuilt.
Symbol of resilience
The suggestive bell tower which can be reached on foot on winter nights, when the lake freezes, represents a symbol of resilience and hope. It is also a place of memories and reflection on the consequences of dam construction and the balance between development and environmental preservation.
