The Is Zuddas Caves, located in the southwestern part of Sardinia, constitute a splendid underground landscape created by the incessant action of water.

The relief of the Mount Meana in which the cavity develops is made up of dolomitic rocks dating back to about 530 million years.

The cave has several rooms, all different from each other, as they are created by the magical work of nature.

In the 60s the cave was used as a marble quarry, but in 1971 it was decided to close it and control the entrance, now accessible only for a fee.

Characteristics of the cave

The cave has a constant temperature of 16 degrees and humidity close to 100%.

Along the tourist route that it extends for approximately 500 m you can admire stalactites and stalagmites, flowstones, cannulas and the rare aragonite eccentrics.

The aragonites present in the cave appear in two different types of forms: the acicular aragonites, similar to needles, called “cave flowers” by speleologists, and the eccentric aragonites (concentrated in a single room), which are thread-like formations that, without the influence of gravity, often take on bizarre shapes.

Every year, a large nativity scene is set up in the “Organ Hall” to celebrate Christmas, made even more evocative by the stalactite and stalagmite sculptures.
