In 2020, the announcement was made that Gorizia and Nova Gorica will be European Capital of Culture 2025. The news flooded the inhabitants of the two border towns with joy. A real roar rang out that day in Piazza della Transalpina, a place that is at the same time a symbol of the division and union of the two states. We recall the words of President Mattarella: "Today the border between Italy and Slovenia from a dividing border is transformed into a meeting point, a connection point, a collaboration point for aggregation and new ideas".
The Mayor Rodolfo Ziberna looked to the future, explaining how the goal is not only to realize the 600 scheduled events, but to change the culture at 360 degrees, so as to offer a future of international integration to the next generations, who will inhabit the territory in 2035, 2045 and 2055.
The transformation of Gorizia and Nova Gorica
There are many Italian regions that have requested partnerships for 600 events that will be organized. From the urban point of view, adaptation works are already being carried out. Numerous spaces in charge and two large dedicated areas. A sports Hall, able to accommodate 7 thousand people, will be converted into a place for demonstrations. A former covered market, from 1800 square meters, will become an agora for various events.
These are changes announced by the mayor of Gorizia. However, Nova Gorica is also at work and the two cities are collaborating. There will be numerous joint projects. Kicked off one 14 km cross-border cycle path, for example. On the one hand you can go as far as Merna and on the other you can take the Salcano-Bovec or the road that connects Gorizia to Grado.
